During the Autumn term our history topic was ‘Explorers’, we focused on Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus. We learnt facts about both explorers, and we went on a fact finding search around the playground, using binoculars that we made. We learnt about the lives of both explorers and how they made a difference to the modern world. While we were learning about Neil Armstrong we learnt that America wasn’t the only country trying to land on the moon and that they were part of the ‘Space Race’. We created a time line of events in chronological order. We learnt all about Neil Armstrong’s space craft Apollo 11 and can explain all the three main parts that made up the rocket. We then moved onto learn all about Christopher Columbus and his discovery of America. We learnt all about Columbus’ life and how he came to make his discovery. As part of our learning we wrote a letter from Columbus to the King and Queen of Spain to explain why Columbus needed to borrow money to build ships. We can also now name the three different ships that Columbus sailed on. We then finished our learning by comparing the two explorers for similarities and differences.
